Hiroaki Satoh, M.D., Ph.D. is Associate Professor of the Department of Nephrology, Hypertension, Diabetology, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at Fukushima Medical University. Dr. Satoh received his M.D. from Akita University and his Ph.D. from University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine. Before coming to Fukushima Medical university, he was a resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Tokyo hospital, a graduate student at University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine, a research fellow in Jerrold M Olefsky's lab at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Satoh has been on the Fukushima Medical University faculty since 2004. His research focuses is to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of insulin resistance.

Pathophysiology and the pharmacological therapy of diet-induced insulin resistance and the related cardiovascular risk factors, mainly organ-related ischemic events. Specifically, investigation of the pharmacological potential of selective ligands of the enzyme GSK-3beta, nuclear receptors PPAR and erythropoietin derivatives in in vivo models of ischemic diseases (myocardial infarction, stroke, acute kidney injury), shock (hemorrhagic and endotoxic shock) and diet-induced (mainly sugar-induced) dysmetabolism.

  Biography :

Dr. Patrick Tso received his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Western Australia in 1978. He is a Professor of Pathology at University of Cincinnati and Director of the NIH funded Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center at UC. He is a well-respected researcher in the area of lipid and energy metabolism. The techniques his lab employs consist of conscious intestinal lymph fistula rats, lymph fistula mouse, intestinal epithelial cell culture, and molecular biology. His lab is currently studying the factors regulating the synthesis and secretion of apolipoproteins, including apo AI, apo AIV, apo B, apo CIII, and Apo AV. The University of Cincinnati Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center, directed by Dr. Tso, is providing the scientific community with standardized, high quality metabolic and physiologic phenotyping services for mouse models of diabetes, diabetic complications, obesity and related disorders. He has authored nearly 250 publications and has received the Daniel Drake Medal Award for his contribution to scientific research and mentoring. He has been a member of the NIH Advisory Council and Study Section since 2006 and his research is currently funded through NIDDK.

Over the years, Dr. Tso’s laboratory has pioneered a number of concepts and approaches to study intestinal fat absorption: 1) Separate pathways for the assembly of chylomicrons and very low density lipoproteins; 2) non-invasive approach to study intestinal fat absorption in both rodents and humans, (Jandacek RJ, Heubi JE, Tso P. Gastroenterology. 2004: 127:139-44); 3) a model for the simultaneous sampling of lymph and portal blood in rats; and 4) lymph fistula mouse model.

Dr. Jagdish N. Sharma is currently a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics of which he is the Founding Chairman, Faculty of Pharmacy, Kuwait University, Kuwait. He has also served as a Professor of Pharmacology at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia, prior to joining Kuwait University in 1999. Prof. Sharma received his B.V.Sc. & A.H. (D.V.M.) in 1970 from Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural University, Jabalpur, India; his M.Sc. in Medical Pharmacology in 1973 from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India; and his Ph.D. in Pharmacology in1976 from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, UK. The Calamus International University, London, U. K., in 2011, awarded D.Sc. degree in Health Sciences to Professor Sharma in recognition of his outstanding highly accomplished professional achievements in research and academic contributions. In 1995, he was elected to an F.C.P. (Fellow) from the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, New York, USA and an F.I.Biol. (Fellow) in 1997 from the Royal Institute of Biology, London, UK. This is a highly prestigious award considered to be at the level of British DSc. Prof. Sharma is an author of a book entitled “Topics in Mediators Pharmacology”, which has been published by the Nova Science Publishers Inc., N.Y., USA. Prof. Sharma is the Editor of a book Progress in Drug Research” series entitled “Recent Developments in the Regulation of Kinins” 2014 which is published by Springer Basel AG, Switzerland. He has been to numerous International conferences as invited speaker. Prof. Sharma has been holding several research grants for the support of his clinical and basic research activities and supervised PhD and MSc theses. He has been PhD external examiner and evaluator for promotions to the ranks of Associate Professor and Professor externally. In Malaysia, his research investigations were funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Malaysia. Currently his clinical priority research grant is funded by the Kuwait University research sector. Dr. Hamdy Ahmad Sliem, currently serving as full professor of internal medicine and endocrinology in the school of medicine, Suez Canal University. Received MD degree from the college of medicine in 1994. Have over three decades experience in the management of diabetes, endocrinal disorders and evaluation of health status of those patients with chronic complications. In the last decade, have over 40 scientific publications in peer reviewed national and international journals, given multiple poster and oral presentations at various national and international conferences. Most of the publications were in the areas prediabetes, insulin resistance and of impact of diabetes on cardiovascular system. Member in editorial board in seven peer review open access international journals. Referee and per reviewer in more than 20 medical journals, more than 80 articles were reviewed in the last 4 years. Supervised and judged several medical theses and shared in many national projects related to different health problems.
