Biography :

Maria Luisa Panno is Professor of Clinical Pathology at the University of Calabria, Cosenza, Italy, where she has been since 1984. She started her scientific and didactic career as Assistant Professor 1984-2000 and from 2000-2008 she has been Associate Professor at the University of Calabria, Italy. Then, in 2011 she became Full Professor of Clinical Pathology at the same University. In the 90's she was awarded fellowships at the Dept. of Rheumathology, Gent, Belgium and at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, then in 2003 she was visiting Professor at the “Kimmel Cancer Center“ , Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia (U.S.A.). These first scientific experiences abroad have been particularly relevant and training. In European laboratories she began working on cell cultures and on the methods for the isolation of cells from tissues. The methodological skills learned were crucial because they allowed her to open the laboratory section of the cell culture at the Dept. of Cell Biology, University of Calabria. From this, began her studies on the behavior of transformed cells in vitro. Professor Panno, at the beginning, has mainly carried out experimental and clinical research in the endocrinology of reproduction, then she has focused the attention on the endocrine –related oncology. The research interest has been directed to functional interaction between transduction pathway of growth factor receptors and estrogen receptor in breast cancer cells and, over the years, she became interested to anti-cancer effects of natural molecules (psoralen , resveratrol and epigallocatechin gallate). Other topics of interest have been reported on her C.V. Professor Panno is co-author of several full papers and her research issues were hosted at many international and national conferences. For its teaching and research experience she has been, and continues to be mentor to many graduate students and post-docs. Currently she is the coordinator of a degree program in “Scientific Information of the Drug and Health Products” Dept. of Pharmacy, Health and Nutritional Sciences, University of Calabria, Cosenza, Italy.
