Biography :

Name: Dr. Harish C. Gugnani, Qualification: B.Sc. (Honours) Agric-1958 (University of Delhi), M.Sc. (Ag) Plant Pathology -BHU (1960) Ph.D. (Medical Microbiology)-1970 (University of Delhi), Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, London (FRC Path.) –1990 Research and Teaching experience: Prof Gugnani is an internationally recognized medical mycologist. Throughout his carrier. he has immensely contributed to medical mycological and microbiological teaching and research in India, Nigeria and the Caribbean. His contributions to the knowledge of ecology of human pathogenic fungi as also the pathogenesis of superficial and systemic mycoses are globally recognized. While working as assistant research officer (September 1962-May1964) in an ICMR scheme under Prof. S. L Kalra, and Dr. L.N, Mohapatra, Dept. of Microbiology, AIIMS, New Delhi, helped in founding the medical mycology section. (this now under the leadership of Prof. Immaculata Xess is one of the top leading centres of research and teaching in medical mycology in India) In late May 1964, he joined as research officer in the Department of Microbiology in National Institute of Communicable Disease (Now known as National Centre for Disease Control), Delhi and founded and developed the medical mycology section. In December end 1972, he left for Nigeria and joined the Department of Microbiology in the Faculties of Biological Sciences and Medicine, in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka/Enugu where he worked till the end of 1997. Later he joined as Professor and Head of Department of Medical Mycology, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute(VPCI), University of Delhi, Delhi (on nomination) and contributed significantly to research and teaching of MD students. After retirement from VPCI in 2004, he continued to teach as a honorary visiting professor in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Centre for Biomedical Research in University of Delhi and do research in collaboration with Department of Pathology, Deen Dayal Upadhaya Hospital, Delhi. Later he worked for over 9 years (September 2007-December 2016) as Professor of Microbiology & Epidemiology in three medical colleges in the Caribbean. He currently serves as an honorary consultant in diagnosis of fungal infections for a couple of hospitals in Delhi. He has actively participated in many conferences and been given several awards for research.
