  Biography :

I grew up in New York City where I attended the oldest school in the Country, Collegiate, from 2nd grade to high school. I then went to college at Harvard and Medical School at Yale. Along the way I did graduate work in Neurobiology at Stanford. I then returned to New York City and did an internship and neurosurgical residency at the Neurological Institute. I was then given a wonderful opportunity to do a one year traveling Peripheral Nerve Fellowship in which I spent time at the University of Toronto in Canada and time at Louisiana State University in New Orleans where I not only learned a lot about surgery on nerves but also became good friends with Emeril Lagasse before he became such a famous Chef. I then joined the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Washington in Seattle. There between 1991 and 2011 I rose through the academic ranks eventually becoming a Professor and Director of the Peripheral Nerve Center, as well as Acting Chair of the section of neurosurgery at the Puget Sound VA Health Care System. I then moved to UCSF in 2012 where I head up their peripheral nerve effort. In the summer of 2014 I moved to join Dr. Andrew Parsa and the Department of Neurosurgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine where I am a Professor and Directory of the Peripheral Nerve Center. This very exciting opportunity is allowing me to pursue my interests in the following areas: pushing the frontiers of peripheral nerve surgery by pioneering new imaging and surgical techniques; teaching a wonderful group of residents and medical students; collaborating with wonderful clinical and research colleagues; and continuing my ongoing interest in biotechnology by taking ideas from their inception into the clinical arena. Since I have been at Northwestern, I have felt like a kid in a candy store with so may wonderful resources and colleagues to work with. My wife and our four grown children are enjoying Chicago’s many culinary and cultural treats as well. I am very grateful to be in such a stimulating, supportive, and resource rich environment where patients can receive the very best care.

Division Head of Neuroradiology, Department of Medical Imaging
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago
USA

  Biography :

I am a practicing board certified Neuroradiologist with sub-specialization in pediatric Neuroradiology for almost 20 years. I have been in several leadership positions including being the division head in neuroimaging in the department of Medical Imaging at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago for almost 5 years as well as founding, managing, and acting as director forthe pediatric neuroradiology fellowship program in my department. In recent years, I have found myself deeply interested in pursuing research activities in my academic career. As some of my personal academic goals in Neuroradiological research are attained, I am motivated by the positive outcomes achieved in projects for which I have participated in the advancement of pediatric neuroradiology. One of the first research projects for which I participated in, I acted as the neuroradiologist/neuroimaging liaison for Children’s Memorial Hospital in the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium. My responsibilities were to ensure the proper protocols were followed and to relay information to my staff and colleagues. In the past 3 years, I completed a Phase III clinical trial using Doteram, an alternative MRI contrast agent, in children between the ages of 2 and 17 years of age. A majority of this patient population were pediatric brain tumor patients. As the principal investigator in this study at Lurie Children’s Hospital, my team and I were successful in recruiting the greatest number of pediatric patients in the United States for this trial. Our program played a significant role with FDA approval of this contrast agent in the U.S., completing and successfully passing an audit by the FDA as a U.S. pediatric site. This experience provided me a better understanding of the dynamics of managing a clinical trial. Taking this skill set into collaboration of communicating complex imaging data to the academic community is the next step and a natural progression in my professional stage. My most recent projects include advanced form of MRI imaging using MR Diffusion, Diffusion Tensor and MR Perfusion Imaging techniques. These techniques will be utilized helping to discriminate various brain tumor tissue types with the goal to assist in treatment planning and ultimately improving patient outcome
