  Biography :

Born in Switzerland during the posting of his British parents with the British Consulate General in Zurich, he went through his schooling in Switzerland and initially studied Veterinary medicine at the University of Zurich, obtaining his diploma as veterinary surgeon and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1982. His first PhD entitled “Parathyroid cell variants may be provoked during immersion fixation” was done in 1987 and earned him Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society FRMS. After studying Comparative Ophthalmology, resulting in a second PhD thesis and his Doctor title from the University of Zurich on “Mesodermal Goniodysgenesis in the Siberian Husky”, he started work at Dispersa AG, later Ciba Vision Ophthalmics and Novartis Ophthalmics as a medical consultant, drugs regulatory affair and later becoming Vice President and responsible head of Medical Affairs. During this time, he developed his first interests in stem cells, leading to research projects into adults mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow and adipose tissue to treat ophthalmic conditions such as AMD, Keratoconjunctivitis sicca and glaucoma. He then set up his own company, Med Cell Europe, where first treatment of stem cell transplants, GMP conform production methods and a whole range of research was performed. This lead to one of the first treatment and stem cell laboratories in Switzerland, several patents on the production of exosomes and paracrine substances by mesenchymal stem cells and the development of treatments with Dendritic Cells, the successful transformation of mesenchymal stem cells into dopamine and insulin producing cells. Dr Kellner is now founder and chief scientist of Mesencell Biotech, which focuses on autologous stem cell and dendritic cell treatments in the Middle East and Northern Africa, co-founder and chief scientist of Med Cell Bahamas with a government licence for stem cell treatments in the Bahamas, co-founder and chief scientist of Med Cell International in the USA and co-founder, board member and chief scientist of Med Cell plc responsible for worldwide research projects and clinical trials for diseases such as Alzheimer Disease, Parkinson Disease, Diabetes T1 and T2 and osteoarthritis. Biography

The discovery that specialized, adult somatic cells when exposed to pluripotency-associated factors or microRNAs (miRs), can become plastic and regain embryonic stem cell (ESC) characteristics was a groundbreaking advance in stem cell research. This induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology, especially when applied to patient-samples, has brought great excitement because it generates an unlimited source of cells capable of differentiation to any cell type, to model human diseases in a dish, to understand underpinning mechanism(s) in a disease-relevant cell-context, to develop diagnostics and novel (personalized) therapeutic strategies and to test a drug’s efficacy and adverse effects by a “clinical trial in a dish”.

He then moved to the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas “Alberto Sols”, CSIC, Madrid and carried out his PhD studies at the Department of Molecular Biology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Amancio Carnero worked on the signal transduction mechanisms induced by Ras oncogenes. He found that Ras activates a Phopholipase D and that the results of such activation have a role in mitogenesis. Upon completing his PhD in 1994 he was an Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, from where he moved in January 1996 to the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York, USA, as a Postdoc in the laboratory of D. H. Beach. When D. Beach’s lab moved to London, Amancio returned to Europe as a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College London (UCL), UK where he worked to improve methods for identifying new molecular targets based on functional screenings (either by gain or loss-of-function). His research interests focused on the cell cycle, cellular senescense and cellular immortalisation. He then spent another two years in London at the Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research (UCL) as a Senior Lecturer before returning to Spain in 2001 to assume his current position as Head of the CNIO’s Assay Development Section in the Experimental Therapeutics Programme. During 9 years He worked at the CNIO developing the preclinical platform to identify new antitumor therapies. Biography
  Research Interest :

The establishment of the cardiovascular system including blood, vasculature and the heart is a highly coordinated process and a prerequisite for embryonic development. A failure of proper development in any of these cell lineages leads to fetal death, stillbirth or life-threatening birth defects. Further, the cardiovascular system is an indispensable organ to maintain one’s daily life, and abnormality of it is salient in the pathogenesis of diseases and/or defects such as congenital heart disease and cancer. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a defect, or abnormality of the heart or blood vessels associated with the heart and is the most common, afflicting one in 100 live births. Not only in adults, another leading life-threatening disease in childhood is cancer; brain and central nervous system tumors, neuroblastoma and Wilms tumor consist of approximately 33% of childhood cancer. Tumor growth and survival are critically dependent upon non-physiological vessel formation. Thus, therapeutic strategies for treating cardiovascular defects and diseases related to dysfunctional vessels should be in the establishment of the functional cardiovascular system that is tightly and delicately coordinated by a series of genetic and epigenetic regulations in developing fetuses. The major effort of the PI’s team is to decipher the underlying mechanisms as to the successful generation of the cardiovascular constituents, namely endothelial, endocardium, cardiomyocytes and hematopoietic cells that share multipotent cardiovascular progenitors, FLK1+ cells. In this regards, we previously reported that ETV2/ER71, a new member of the ETS transcription factor family, is the direct upstream regulator of VEGFR2 (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor 2, also known as FLK1) and that ETV2 is indispensable for cardiovascular system development. Extending from the previous findings, our significant effort is currently given to study molecular mechanisms by which ETV2 regulates cardiovascular system development. In addition, my lab is interested in the generation of functional endothelial cells directly from somatic cells such as skin fibroblasts (direct reprogramming), aiming autologous cell replacement therapy. Outcome from these studies will provide a new and detailed insight into cardiovascular development, which could provide novel opportunities for the development of specific targets for the cardiovascular defects/diseases.
