  Biography :

Dr. Lu Qi obtained a medical degree in China and PhD at Tufts University in the United States. He is now an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Professor of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health. He is also Adjunct Professor at Peking University, China; and Distinguished Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, China. Dr. Qi’s major research interests have focused on nutritional and genetic epidemiology of obesity, type 2 diabetes and related cardiovascular diseases. His recent research topics also include epigenetics and metabolomics, and the complex interactions between omics events and lifestyle/diet factors in relation to metabolic disorder. He has extensive experience in leading epidemiology and genetic studies in large cohorts, randomized clinical trials, and international collaborations. He is currently the Principal Investigator of five NIH-funded grants, and several grants funded by other foundations. He serves as Editor-in-Chief for World Journal of Diabetes; Associate Editor for BMC Medical Genetics, Regional Editor (North America) for Current Diabetes Reviews; and severs as editorial board member for several journals such as Journal of Nutrition, Nutrition Reviews, and Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism. He was awarded ‘Roger R. Williams Award for Genetic Epidemiology (2008)’, ‘The Mark Bieber Award (2009)’, and ‘Jeremiah and Rose Stamler Research Award for New Investigators (finalist; 2010)’ by American Heart Association; and ‘Michaela Modan Memorial Award (2010)’ by American Diabetes Association. He is a fellow of American Heart Association (FAHA), American College of Nutrition (FACN), and The Obesity Society (FOS).

Dr. Yoshio Uehara graduated from University of Tokyo in 1976 and received PhD from University of Tokyo in 1983 for investigation of endothelial prostacyclin and hypertension. In 1983, he was involved in research on salt and hypertension at Dept. of Medicine, Minnesota state university hospital. In 1985,he was offered a position of assistant professor of Tokyo University Hospital, and in 1999, associate professor and director HealthServices Center, University of Tokyo. In 2009, he was professor, clinical nutrition, Kyoritsu Women’s University. He is a member of Japanese Society of Hypertension (specialist, FJSH), Japanese Society of Cardiology (specialist), Japanese Society of Nephrology (specialist), Japanese Society of Endocrinology. He is a member of committees of Japanese government and Life science foundation, Tokyo, Japan.He is a physician and researcher of hypertension and organ damage and nutrition-related cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. His work has been published thus far in 147 international peer-review journals and in 316 literatures in Japanese medical journals. Exploring novel natural substances promoting health are also within my scope of investigation. Nutrition and epigenetic mechanism for adult metabolic diseases. He is very interested in the role of salt during gestation in offspring health.

Marly A. Cardoso holds a PhD in Food Science and Experimental Nutrition from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and a Qualified University Lecturer in Public Health at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she is Associate Professor of Nutritional Epidemiology and Chair of the Department of Nutrition at the University of São Paulo (USP) School of Public Health. She is currently research member of the Center for Epidemiological Studies in Health and Nutrition of the University of Sao Paulo (NUPENS, http://nupensusp.wix.com/nupens ), and in 2012 she was Lemann Visiting Scholar of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University. Considering the nutritional transition in Brazil, she has been working on nutritional surveys in the Amazon region. In child health, she has been describing health and nutritional conditions in Amazonian counties with socioeconomic indicators that are substantially lower than the national average. The fieldwork has been done with the participation of community health agents, nursing students from Federal University of Acre, and university level health professionals with training and local supervision by her research team. Her research team has been working in the assessment of environmental conditions and child health status (including assessment of anthropometric indices, biochemical indicators and morbidities - diarrhea, respiratory diseases and other infections), and providing basic health information and training for health workers, mothers and children, including cooking workshops to increase the consumption of local fruits and vegetables. She is the Principal Investigator for the research project entitled Effectiveness of home fortification with vitamins and minerals for the prevention of iron deficiency and anemia in infants younger than 1 year of age: a multi-center study of Brazilian cities (ENFAC – Estudo Nacional de Fortificacao caseira da Alimentacao Complementar saudavel), supported by the Ministry of Health of Brazil, CNPq and UNICEF.
