  Biography :

I'm a consultant transplant surgeon and senior lecturer (Associate professor), University of Liverpool and University of Sheffield, UK who is interested in the management of medically and surgically challenging transplant patients. Developed and promoted many innovations (enhanced recovery in transplantation and non-heart beating programme). I introduced and promoted a new surgical approach in third and fourth transplantation to Sheffield. I introduced and promoted dual kidney transplantation of marginal deceased kidneys to Sheffield, UK. I'm also interested in immunologically challenging transplantation, where I transplanted kidneys across positive cross-match and highly sensitised patients. I perform parathyroidectomy for renal patients, also trained many surgeons to perform this operation endorsed by the International Society of Nephrologists (ISN). I'm on the panel of examiners of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England, also a member of the examination panel of the intercollegiate exit exam in general surgery and transplantation of the Joint Committee on the Intercollegiate Examinations. I'm leading an online course in transplantation awarding higher degree in transplantation from University of Liverpool, UK. I'm appointed as ISN ambassador in transplantation and surgery of the parathyroid.

  Biography :

I have experience of surgical training in 3 continents. I have developed superb working relationship with surgical trainers that has led to transformation of core surgical training programme in western sector of HENW. My main reason for regularly providing externality to Glasgow deanery, Manchester deanery (prior to 2016 it was a separate deanery then merged with Merseyside) and West Midlands deanery, has been a bit ‘selfish’: to learn from good practices of other regions. That is a simple and economical (money and effort wise) way of adopting practices that are already used and well tested, ‘we do not have to reinvent wheel’. I was invited to join ‘BSS Course Redevelopment’ a consisting of experts from 4 Royal Surgical Colleges. I have been a member of committees for (a) UK guidelines for using sirolimus (b) UK guidelines for transplanting across barrier of ABO incompatibility and hypersensitisation . As a faculty of TrACE (Training and Assessment in Clinical Environment, a Royal College of Surgeon’s course, meant to train consultants to level 2 educators. In my various roles as a teacher, organiser, planner, manager and administrator, I have ensured that each and every trainee can contact me anytime to discuss any issue elated to training and education. While maintaining current strengths of core surgical programme, we keep performing 6 monthly SWOT analysis to reassure that our systems are robust. I have been panel member for selection of core surgical trainees for 3 years and ST3 selection for 4 years. I follow the principle ‘never lower the guard’ (Chanakya aka Kautiya 35-283 BC). In Kautilya’s Arthshastra (Economics) he described an inseparable link between economics, politics, leadership and philosophy stating: ‘Success is no accident’. That applies to surgical training as well as to undergraduate training.
