Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted teaching in a variety of institutions, especially in nursing and medical schools. To minimize the impact of lockdown, institutions had to find another approach to teach medical students. Fortunately, current technology enabled electronic learning (e-learning) to be the core method of teaching the curriculum during the COVID-19 pandemic. E-learning or online learning is used increasingly in healthcare professionals’ education. There is no single agreed definition of e-learning, but it generally refers to internet-based forms of learning, rather than face to face interaction and where traditional methods of learning are supported by online resources. It can take a variety of forms and there are various reasons for using it. The primary objective of the study was to assess the effectiveness of online teaching among student nurses.

Method: The research design adopted for the study was exploratory design and the approach used was quantitative approach. The sample subjects comprised of student nurses of DGNM 2nd year of Rufaida College of nursing, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 70 student nurses. The structured knowledge questionnaire was used to assess the effectiveness of online method of teaching 11 experts from medical surgical filed established the content validity of the tool, and lesson plan. Both pre-test and post-test was used so as to assess the effectiveness of the online teaching. Students were categorized in the good, average and the poor category. Range of score was calculated according to the highest and lowest marks scored by the students. Mean, median and standard deviation of the knowledge scores were calculated to find out the effectiveness of the online teaching.

Results: The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in accordance with the objectives of the study. There was significant difference between the mean of the pre-test and the post-test that is i.e., 17.11 and 21.75 which indicated that the online teaching was effective.

Conclusion: The study revealed that the online teaching is no less effective when compared to traditional teaching as the students scored really well after administration of the online teaching via online mode.
