  Biography :

The aim my group is to unravel cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying aging progression and its significance for brain diseases. The group has a long-standing interest in molecular mechanisms of brain remodelling in the aged brain. My group has studied the plasticity of the aging brain in response to stimuli on a background of comorbidities for more than 15 years and to stroke injury for the last 10 years. Neuroinflammation is also at the core of our studies. Recently, we became interested in the treatment of stroke, experimentally, using hypothermia, caloric restriction and stem cells. Overall our results suggest that: (1) although older animals retain the potential for brain plasticity-related cytogenetic events after injury, the expression of key brain plasticity-associated genes and proteins is often attenuated and temporally altered; (2) an important cellular event associated with restricted axonal growth after stroke in aged animals is the early formation of a scar in the infarcted region; (3) Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor lowers mortality and enhances neurogenesis in the brains of post-stroke aged animals; (4) vascular wall reactivity is exacerbated in the post-stroke aged animals. (5)The aged brain can still respond to cellular therapies.

Professor and Director
Pathophysiology and Molecular Medicine
University of Greifswald

  Biography :

Heinrich Brinkmeier, Ph.D., is currently Prof. of Pathophysiology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Greifswald, Germany. He is also Director of the Institute of Pathophysiology since May 2002. Heinrich studied biology with a focus on developmental biology and cell differentiation. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Bielefeld, Germany, in 1989. In his thesis he discovered the underlying defect of mouse myotonia showing that lack of chloride channels in muscle fibers is the basic problem. He showed that reduced muscular chloride conductance can cause overexcitability of fibers and muscle stiffness in a mouse mutant abbreviated as ADR. After his Ph.D. he moved to the University of Ulm, south Germany and spent about twelve years investigating voltage-gated ion channels in nerve and muscle fibers, including pharmacology of ion channels and channelopathies. During the years in Ulm he became interested in intracellular Ca2+-regulation of muscle fibers and the pathomechanism of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. At Greifswald University his group is studying the role of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels in muscle under normal and pathophysiological conditions. Applied techniques are, besides electrophysiology, muscle force measurements, histology, analyses of gene expression, proteomics and pharmacology. Heinrich Brinkmeier organized meanwhile six international meetings and workshops, is reviewer for numerous scientific journals and obtained four scientific awards.

Prof. Dr. Thomas van Groen
Associate Professor, Tech. Director Behavioral Assessment Core
Dept. Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology
University of Alabama at Birmingham

  Biography :

After obtaining my Ph.D. in Neurobiology at the Universiteit van Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 1985, I have published more than 100 peer reviewed full-length papers. My postdoctoral trainings were in neuroanatomy and in behavioral analysis. My research focuses on three projects, 1) on the role of Aβ production and clearance in Alzheimer’s disease and 2) the role of hypertension, blood vessels and inflammation in this process, and 3) the general aging process. My first research line is primarily focused on the use of therapeutic agents (e.g., amyloid β binding peptides and/or dietary intervention) that may be promising in the alleviation or delay of age-related neural and cognitive changes. My second research interest is in the role of vascular pathology in Alzheimer’s disease, especially the relation between white matter infarcts and AD pathology. Finally, we are studying the relation between increased Aβ pathology, inflammation and synaptic pathology. Currently, our research focus in on the role of Aβ oligomers in the development of Alzheimer’s disease pathology and cognitive deficits. Our data indicate that reducing the level of Aβ oligomers in the brain reduces Alzheimer’s disease cognitive deficits. My expertise is in Alzheimer’s disease-related and aging-related neurodegeneration and neuropathology in the brain. Furthermore, I have extensive rodent behavioral expertise, both in my own experiments with a focus on cognition, and since I have been the Technical Director of the UAB Behavioral Assessment Core for the last 9 years. In these years we have expanded the core from two rooms to fourteen rooms, with a concomitant increase in behavioral/cognitive tests that are available. Thus, my lab is well positioned to do animal behavioral/cognitive assessments, including neurological deficit analysis, spatial and non-spatial learning and memory tests, and the analysis of circadian activity, including eating, drinking and sleeping patterns.
