  Biography :

Paul J. Higgins received his Ph.D. degree in molecular biology from New York University in 1976. He joined the faculty of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Cornell University School of Medicine in 1977, where he was a member of the program on cell biology/genetics and the program on molecular biology/virology. Dr. Higgins is currently a Professor and Director of the Center for Cell Biology and Cancer Research at the Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. He was the founding Vice President of the Albany Research Institute and currently serves on the Board of Directors. He has been the Chairman of National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense Review Panels, and received several prestigious awards including the Moyer Award and, most recently, the 2008 Excellence Award in Molecular Medicine. Dr. Higgins has been a member of several journal editorial boards, edited books on cancer biology, and published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers.

  Biography :

Tetsuro Tamaki completed undergraduate training in physical education at the Waseda University of Tokyo in Japan prior to obtaining an MS degree in physical education (Exercise Physiology) and a PhD degree in Medicine(Physiology) from the Tokai University of Kanagawa in Japan. He has held faculty positions in the Department of Physiology at the Tokai University School of Medicine of Isehara in Kanagawa. He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Regenerative Medicine, Division of Basic Clinical Science, Tokai University School of Medicine, and the head of the laboratory of the muscle physiology and cell biology unit. He is involved in experiments focused on skeletal muscle hypertrophy, hyperplasia, regeneration and aging on the basis of neuromuscular physiology. Recently, he has mainly been involved stem cell biology and therapy using skeletal muscle interstitium-derived multipotent stem cells. Currently, his study is extending the cross-talking among hypertrophy, hyperplasia, regeneration and aging and stem cells in the skeletal muscle.

Dr. Xuejun Huang Parsons received her BS in Biology from Fudan University, PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular, and Cell Biology from Cornell University, and completed her PostDoc studies as a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Research Fellow at University of California at San Diego, USA. Since, she has been supported by grants from National Institutes of Health (NIH) to become an independent stem cell scientist and leader in pluripotent human stem cell research as principal investigator and faculty at University of California and Sanford Burnham Medical Research Institute, USA. She has served as the key personnel and project leader in one of the US exploratory centers for pluripotent human stem cell research funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH), and has led the collaborative effort with prestigious US stem cell biologists to develop the utility of pluripotent human stem cells as a model system for a diverse range of biological and medical problems. Dr. Parsons is the co-founder and President of San Diego Regenerative Medicine Institute, founder and CEO of Xcelthera INC, and co-founder and CEO of PluriStem Biopharmaceutical Ltd. Dr. Parsons is an internationally recognized expert and leader in the emerging field of pluripotent human stem cells and regenerative medicine, and has been invited to speak at many international conferences on stem cells, regenerative medicine, and cell therapy. Dr. Parsons' invention on pluripotent human stem cell technology has won prestigious North American Technology Innovation Award in Stem Cell Technologies in 2013 based on an extensive and independent competitive analysis of the North American Stem Cell Technologies Market and the findings of Best Practices research by Frost & Sullivan.   Biography :

A/Professor Sidhu has more than 28 years of experience in the major field of reproductive technology with specialisation in cell and developmental biology including stem cells discovery and transitional research, administration, management and liaising with industry partners. To date, he has produced two international patents on human embryonic stem cells, and in 2010, filed another application for a patent for producing the first disease-specific induced pluripotent stem cell clones that are the resource material for NHMRC Development Grant Application under consideration. Earlier in 2008 he produced a high throughput neural chip for protein expression analyses in collaboration with a biotech company.

The discovery that specialized, adult somatic cells when exposed to pluripotency-associated factors or microRNAs (miRs), can become plastic and regain embryonic stem cell (ESC) characteristics was a groundbreaking advance in stem cell research. This induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology, especially when applied to patient-samples, has brought great excitement because it generates an unlimited source of cells capable of differentiation to any cell type, to model human diseases in a dish, to understand underpinning mechanism(s) in a disease-relevant cell-context, to develop diagnostics and novel (personalized) therapeutic strategies and to test a drug’s efficacy and adverse effects by a “clinical trial in a dish”.
