Dr. Jia obtained his Ph. D. in 2004 at School & Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University, China. After Ph. D. study, he went to HIV and AIDS malignancy Branch, Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, NIH, USA, as a visiting scientist from 2005 to 2010. He was Associated Professor from 2005 to 2012 and promoted to Full Professor in 2012 at Wuhan University. Dr. Jia’s research interests mainly focus on the development of effective anti-caries DNA vaccine and alternative splicing of pre-mRNA. Several methods have been developed to enhance the efficiency of anti-caries DNA vaccine, including a DNA vaccine targeting antigen-presenting cells by fusing CTLA-4 with antigens, co-immunization with chemokine CCL20 or CXCL13 expression plasmid, co-immunization with the shRNA expression plasmid against STAT3 to reduce the immunosuppression environment in mucosal immune system. He is also interested in the regulation of alternative splicing of pre-mRNA splicing, the role of alternative splicing in immune responses and immunosuppression, and the role of alternative splicing in tumorigenesis.

. S. Tomar initiated her scientific career while she was doing her Masters in the Dept of Biophysics, AIIMS by studying the structural aspects of a disintegrin protein from saw scaled viper (Acta Crystallogr D Biol Crystallogr., 2000; J. Mol. Biol., 2004). During her doctoral studies at Purdue University, she studied structural and functional aspects of replication proteins from alphaviruses and illustrated a novel TATase activity of alphavirus RNA dependent RNA polymerase (J. Virol., 2006). After her Ph.D. in 2006, she joined the Department of Biotechnology, IIT Rorokee in 2006 as a Lecturer and in very short period because of her outstanding academic and research record she has been promoted to associate professor. At IIT Roorkee she has established her own research group with focus on investigating the structural and functional aspects of the key replication enzymes of human pathogens such as viral proteases, capsid and viral polymerases of infectious plus-strand RNA viruses including Chikungunya virus. Recently her group has developed and reported a FRET based chikungunya virus protease inhibitor screening assay (Nature Sci. Rep. 2015). Their group was the first one to determine and report the structure of trans-active capsid protease from alphaviruses i.e. Aura virus (J. Virol. 2014). Her group is also focusing on targeting the virus budding cycle by investigating the protein-protein interaction between the viral capsid and the viral glycoproteins. Structural investigations of the capsid protein from Aura virus and its complex with an inhibitor molecule were done by her group that have shed light on the critical protein-protein molecular contacts that are important for virus budding (PLoS ONE, 2012). Her group has also successfully characterized the enzymatic activity of Sindbis virus capping enzyme having methylase and guanylyltransferase activity essential for capping of the viral genome (Protein expr. purif. 2011). Additionally, her group is involved SAR studies of polyamine biosynthesis pathway enzymes. With the combination of molecular biology, site-directed mutagenesis, enzyme kinetics and in silco studies, her group has shown that ODC, in E. histolytica is active in the dimeric form (PLoS Negl Trop Dis. 2012). Later, by making the C-terminal truncations in the EhODC enzyme the group was successful in crystallizing and determining the atomic structure for EhODC enzyme. Structural analysis of EhODC in her lab revealed adaptive mutations in and around the active site of EhODC that lead to DFMO drug resistance (PLoS One. 2013). The above mentioned original contributions from S. Tomar's laboratory may assist in the discovery and development of specific drug molecules to combat these infectious parasites.

Antiviral drug discovery: Chikungunya virus is arthropod-borne, enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus. It belongs to the genus alphavirus that includes nearly 31 members that are causative agents of a range of serious human and livestock diseases. Infection in humans leads cause fever, rash, encephalitis, eye blindness and polyarthritis. In some cases infection by alphavirus such as Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) and Estern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) leads to ~33% mortality rates. The other virus members of the genus alphavirus include Sindbis virus (SINV), Aura virus and Semliki Forest virus (SFV). Due to frequent epidemic outbreaks of CHIKV in the last decade in the Indian subcontinent, it is considered to be a reemerging pathogen and a potential public health threat. Currently, no antiviral drug or vaccine is available against alphaviruses. Our research group strives to understand the structural and functional mechanism of virus specific enzymes and viral components, develop inhibitor screening assays that are used for identification alphavirus specific inhibitors that can be further rationally developed for antiviral therapies. The 5′ two-third of the alphavirus genome encodes four virus specific replication enzymes (nsP1, nsP2, nsP3 and nsP4), which carry out essential functions during replication of virus in the host cell. The other one-third of the viral genome codes for structural proteins viz. capsid protein (CP), E3, E2, 6K, and E1. In the past, our laboratory has established biochemical assays and characterized the methyltransferase activity of the capping enzymes nsP1 and the viral polymerase activity of nsP4 from Chikungunya virus and Sindbis virus. We have developed an inhibitor screening assay for viral cysteine protease and have reported its structure. nsP2 carries out the indispensable function of cleaving the nsP1234 polyprotein into functional replication components and is an excellent drug target for chikungunya. Based on the structure of nsP2 protease our lab identified and characterized geometric and pharmacophore peptidomimetics inhibitors of the enzyme. We have structurally and functionally analyzed the multifunctional capsid protein (CP) of alphavirus. CP along with making structural component of virus capsid, acts as a serine protease. CP undergoes autocatalytic cleavage to release itself from the rest of the polyprotein. We developed a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based proteolytic assay for high throughput screening (HTS) of inhibitors against this protein. Our group was first to demonstrate it trans-protease activity. We have successfully produced and purified recombinant capsid proteins of Aura virus (AVCP) and Chikungunya virus (CVCP) and also crystallised these proteins. Structures have revelaed that CP contains a hydrophobic pocket through which it is proposed to interact with the viral glycoproteins during virus budding. This pocket has been targeted for therapeutic intervention by blocking it with heterocyclic molecules such as dioxane, piperazine, picolinic acid etc. Piperazine, a drug which was earlier used as anti-histamines and anti-depressants was also validated as potential antiviral in cell-culture based studies. This report of viral inhibition by piperazine has been highlighted in media and all leading national news papers like The Hindu, HT, TOI etc. The project is being continued and efficacy of the drug to inhibit the virus in animal model (mice) is being tested Nutraceutical Drug Discovery and Therapy: Drug resistance on the rise motivates prospective research toward discovery of new bioactive substances from nature and discovery of new application of known drug molecules. The main aim is to identify novel molecules or discover novel bioactivity of existing molecules and characterize these phytomolecules for understanding their properties for antimicrobial and antiviral potency. The antiviral and antibacterial properties of botanicals/phytomolecules such as protease inhibitors, chitinase, lectins, and chitinase-like proteins have immense potential for use in therapeutic interventions and as biopesticides to control infectious disease vectors like mosquitoes. Our group has successfully isolated and characterized phytomolecules like Tamarind Kunitz-type-dual-inhibitor (TKI), chitinase, chi-like lectins, chitinase-like proteins, 11S globulin and 2S albumin. Techniques like various column chromatography, protein estimation, carbohydrate binding, sugar specificities etc are employed to study the potential antimicrobial proteins and molecules. Chitinase-like proteins (CLPs) show fungicidal, insecticidal, antiviral, antiproliferative and mitogenic characteristics. Chitinase and chitinase like protein have been tested as potential antiviral agents against cikungunya and dengue viruses in my laboratory and will be soon patented. The work on tamarind Kunitz proteinase inhibitor, 2S albumin and medicinal plant extract and known food supplements is being carried out in our lab for testing the potency of antiviral and antibacterial

Dr. Soumya Basu started her scientific career with B.Sc. degree in Physics (Hons.), Chemistry and Mathematics (2001) and M.Sc. degree in Microbiology (2003). She joined Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Dr. D. Y. Patil Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Institute as an Assistant Professor in 2014. She is a Principal Investigator in Cancer and Translational Research Laboratory and currently managing 1 extramural (DST) and 3 intramural projects. Her research work focuses on targeted anti-cancer therapy and she closely works with her bioinformatics and medicinal chemist partners. Apart from her research responsibilities, she is also involved in teaching, both theory and practical courses in cell biology, physiology and immunology to graduate students. Before joining Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, she was a Research Associate at ACTREC, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai and worked on designing a BRET based genetic sensor for monitoring in vivo dynamics of caspase-3 activation. In 2008, Soumya joined Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, Kolkata, as a senior research fellow in an ICMR funded project and obtained the PhD degree in Life Sciences in 2012 from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Her work during this period has been published in 7 different international journals. During her PhD work, she had designed different possible anti-cancer agents as mitochondria targeted therapy in drug resistant cancer and extensively studied their mechanism of action, both in vitro and in vivo. She worked as a UGC project fellow from Jan 2006-Jan 2008, where her work was on “Synthesis, biological evaluation and quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) study of glutamine analogs as possible antitumor agents” at Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Jadavpur University. This work resulted in publication of 5 papers in different international peer reviewed journals. Tala Shekarian is a postdoc fellow in Leon Berard cancer research center in France. She obtained Bachelor's degree in biology from Azad university of Tehran. She did two masters in genetic and cellular pathology and fundamental infectiology at the University of Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL1). She did her PhD in the field of immune-oncology in cancer research center of Lyon, under supervision of Dr Christophe Caux. During her PhD training she obtained prestigious young investigator award from American Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) in Washington. Her research interest is cancer immunotherapy mainly in pediatric cancers, oncolytic viruses and immunecheckpoint blockade therapies.

Dr. Nafees Ahmad is Professor of Immunobiology and Director of Immunity and Infection at the College of Medicine, University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. He obtained his undergraduate and postgraduate education from the Aligarh Muslim University, India and doctorate from the Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, India. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in HIV/AIDS from the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA. His research has focused on mechanisms of HIV immunopathogenesis in younger and older HIV-infected patients, including the HIV-mediated aging of the immune system. He is investigating the mechanisms of differential HIV-1 infection in younger and older populations, including the role of viral and host factors and dysregulation of T cell functions. He has authored more than 100 publications and prestigious medical school text book “Sherris Medical Microbiology”.

I (Dr Sobia Manzoor) earned my PhD with specialization in Molecular Virology in February 2011 from CEMB, University of The Punjab Lahore, Pakistan. I joined NCVI, Pakistan (NUST centre of Virology and Immunology) for Postdoctoral studies from June 2010 to 20th September, 2011. Since 21st September, 2011 to date now, I am the Group leader of Molecular Virology Research Laboratories at ASAB, NUST Islamabad, Pakistan. My research group is one of the major research groups to conduct studies on viral hepatitis in the country. I am supervising a team of researchers to study the various aspects of hepatitis viruses. I have been awarded “PAMS-Young Scientist Gold Medal Award, 2015” a national prestigious award by Pakistan Academy of Medical Sciences for remarkable performance and contribution in the field of Medical and health sciences. Dr Binod Kumar is a Virologist with more than 10 years of experience in Molecular Biology of RNA and DNA viruses. He obtained his Ph.D in Medical Microbiology in 2014 from V.P. Chest Institute, University of Delhi, India. He worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow from 2014 to 2016 and has been promoted to Senior Research Associate in Microbiology & Immunology at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, USA. He has worked extensively on human influenza (pH1N1, H1N1, H3N2, Inf B) & other respiratory viruses and their diagnostics and parthenogenesis. His Post-doctoral work focused on the entry and trafficking of KSHV (HHV-8) and host innate immune response generated against other Herpes viruses (KSHV, HSV, EBV). Dr Kumar has published more than 35 research/review articles (PLOS Pathogens, J Virol., Viruses, Front. Immunol., Front. Microbiol., Antiviral Res., Nuc Acid Ther.), co-authored book chapters and has presented his research work in several national and international conferences. Carlos Gil Ferreira completed his training in Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute (INCA), in Rio de Janeiro in 1997. In the same year, he began a doctoral program in Experimental Oncology of the Department of Medical Oncology at the Vrije Universiteit Medical Center ( VUMC) in Amsterdam. In VUMC, Dr. Ferreira also worked for 4 years as a fellow in clinical and translational research. Since 2001, Dr. Ferreira back in Brazil working at the National Cancer Institute, where he was appointed Head of the Clinical and Translational Service in 2002. In 2004, created the National Tumor Bank and DNA INCA. In 2010 Dr. Ferreira launched the New Development program INCA Medicines and the National Network of Clinical Research in Oncology linked to the Ministry of Health. I have more than 190 scientific publications, 3 monographs, textbook "Virology" (2012), 10 patents, 4 innovations. I am currently working as the Lugansk State Medical University, Rubezhnoye, Ukraine , is the supervisor of the nine research programs in virology and biochemistry.

Dr. Abbasali Raz, holding a PhD degree in Medical Biotechnology and has been an assistant professor in the Malaria and Vector Research Group (MVRG), Pasteur Institute of Iran (PII) since 2013. He received a B.S. degree in laboratory sciences from Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2002 and a M.Sc. degree in Medical Biotechnology from Tarbiat Modarres University in 2006. He completed his Ph.D at Pasteur Institute of Iran. His interest is in finding the Anopheles vectors (i.e. An. stephensi) target molecules that are involved in Plasmodium sexual development, molecular characterization and identification of insect proteins with biomedical applications and development of paratransgenic tools for malaria and other VBDs control. He is teaching the bioinformatics (primer designing, genomics databases and phylogeny analysis), molecular biology and genetic engineering.

I initiated my research career while doing master of philosophy in Microbiology and completed my research work in King Edward Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan. My initial research work was based on antibiotic resistance that was the key issue at that time. There was little information available regarding the surveillance of antibiotic resistance. That was the first study of Pakistan that identifies the VRSA in Pakistani population. I wrote multiple publications regarding the growing concern of antibiotic resistance in Pakistan. I did my masters in Biosciences with distinction and completed M. Phil in Microbiology as batch topper. In 2014, I went to Pakistan’s pioneer vaccine manufacturing facility (Amson Vaccines and Pharma Pvt. Ltd. ) and working here as Manager, Microbiology. I am recently engaged in PhD studies working on vaccine formulations, safety studies, method development and clinical studies. I am constantly involved in research activities related to human vaccines and have multiple international publications. Vaccines are part of the neglected areas. Very few studies cover the infinite scope of vaccine research.

Prof.Mahendra Pal, Ex-Professor of Veterinary Public Health (UNDP), Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, is an internationally renowned scientist, and a well known distinguished academician with 601 publications and 8 books. Prof. Pal also worked as Professor and Head,Department of Veterinary Public Health, Anand Agricultural University, India. He is associated as Editor and Member of many online journals. Prof. Pal guided over 67 students at DVM, MVSc, MSc and Ph.D. level in India and Ethiopia. He is credited to develop Pal’s medium, APRM medium, PHOL stain and Narayan stain for the study of fungi. Prof. Pal elucidated for the first time the role of Cryptococcus neoformans in the mastitis of goat and buffalo, Fusarium solani in corneal ulcer of buffalo, Aspergillus fumigatus in rhinitis of camel and mule, Trichophyton verrucosum in dermatitis of deer, and Candida tropicalis in human lung empyema. He has established for the first time the prevalence of Cryptococcus neoformans in the environment of New Zealand, Nepal, and Djibouti. Prof.Pal has reported the first isolation of Candida albicans from mastitic milk , and Trichophyton verrucosum in dermatitis of camel in Ethiopia. Prof. Pal launched the Ph.D. programme for first time in Veterinary Public Health at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia and also at College of Veterinary Science, Anand, Gujarat, India. His biography is published in World’s Who and Who. Prof. Pal is recipient of many award including “Distinguished Teacher Award”, “Jawaharlal Nehru Award”, “International Achievement Award” and “ Life Time Achievement Award”. Prof. Pal delivered guest lecturers in medical, and veterinary colleges in India, New Zealand, Japan,Ethiopia.He is the First Indian Veterinarian who worked as “JSPS Visiting Scientist” at University of Tokyo, Japan. Considering his immense contribution, Prof. Pal is known as “Father of Veterinary Mycology” in India. Very recently, he launched “Narayan Consultancy” on Veterinary Public Health and Microbiology to give free technical advice to scientists of poor resource countries of the world.

Dr Gaurav Gupta is BVSc, MVSc and PhD (Virology), Senior Research Scientist based at Jenner institute, University of Oxford, UK in Transmission blocking Malaria group. He was leading various vaccine projects from 2004-2017 at Indian Biotech Industries (Biomed, Panacea Biotech and Zydus Cadila) and contributed for live viral, inactivated and recombinant DNA vaccines (Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Influenza, Hepatitis B, Papilloma, Malaria, Leishmania, Hepatitis A, Japanese Encephalitis, Hepatitis E, Congo & Ebola vaccines). About 10 vaccines has reached to final commercialization after passing all clinical trials and has about 30 publications & 4 patents in areas of Immunomodulation, Vaccinology and Immunodiagnostics.
